Meeting the Patient's Needs: Adaptation, Change and Safety Through the Cancer Journey.
How do we act as therapists when the patient has to go through dramatic changes? This paper refers to supporting the patient with Reflexology through the cancer journey from diagnosis to journeys end and all his way through surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
How do we work with acutely ill cancer patients, how do we cope with panic attacks and acute anxiety during chemotherapy.
Why we might be a contraindication ourselves as well as working together with other healthcare professionals.
How our treatments change during the cancer journey as the focus of patient's care goes from acute treatment to palliative care and prospect of end of life. As the patients condition deteriorates how we as therapists adapt our treatments to maintain patient comfort, safety and potency of treatment, focusing on pressures, techniques and treatment times.
Ms.Edwina Hodkinson has worked with people with cancer for the past 26 years. First as a Nurse and then as a complementary practitioner. Mrs. Lynne Booth, England
Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT) and its Role in Palliative Care
This paper describes the development, practice and benefits of Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT) and its role in palliative care. VRT is a profound reflexology technique where the hands and feet are briefly treated in a weight-bearing position with the suggestion that this can increase the therapeutic response of reflexology. VRT integrates well with other complementary and allopathic modalities. Principles will be discussed as to how Reflexology can be used to stimulate the immune system and help to reduce the side effects of some allopathic treatments within the field of Oncology.
Lynne Booth has a Bristol private Reflexology practice, a St. Monica Trust clinic for chronically ill residents, and treats professional footballers. In the mid 1990s Lynne developed Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT) and has taught the techniques to thousands internationally. She has written the best seller ‘Vertical Reflexology’ and also ‘Vertical Reflexology for Hands’ and has trained Nurses, Caregivers and Reflexologists to use powerful shortened Reflexology/VRT techniques in Oncology units, hospices, care homes and individual clients. She has worked with the terminally ill and people living with cancer.
